Mentoring Opportunity

The Mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago is to empower at-risk youth by providing high-impact one to one mentoring that enables lifelong success. BBBSMC currently serves more than 1,700 youth ages 7 to 17 throughout the greater Chicagoland area including Cook, DuPage and Lake County, Illinois and Lake County, Indiana. Our services are provided to youth in many high need areas throughout the city and suburbs including Pilsen, Skokie, Logan Square, Englewood, Waukegan, Maywood and Gary, Indiana. Our mentoring programs utilize individual mentor-mentee relationships to affect positive, measurable and sustainable change in the lives of participating children, their families, and their broader communities.

Requirements for Position: 
Site Based Mentoring: Volunteers are matched with a child between the ages of 7 and 14 to form a mentoring relationship. Bigs and Littles attend twice monthly program meetings at a designated site, such as a school or club. Matches engage in individual match activities and group games that support a child’s confidence, competence, and caring. The time commitment for this program is twice monthly for 1 ½ hours, for a minimum of one year. A Big Brothers Big Sisters staff person is always there to facilitate the Site Based sessions. Volunteers must meet the following criteria to be matched with a child in our program: • Be at least 18 years old. • Be a resident of the United States for at least 3 consecutive years. • Commit to attending the program on a twice monthly basis for a minimum of 1 year. • Be able to participate in regular phone contacts with a Big Brothers Big Sisters staff person. • Provide your own transportation to and from the program meetings. • Be accepted as a volunteer through our screening process, including criminal background check, DCFS background check, references and in-person interview. • Be willing to pay a one-time application fee of $27.
